Where to find the closed testing opt-in link (and how to share it)

The opt-in link for a closed test lives on the Testers tab of that closed track in Play Console. It only appears once the app status is Published, so if you can't see it yet, your release hasn't gone live for testers. Copy it from there, and send it to the people on your tester list together with a short note about which Google account to use.

Where the link is in Play Console

  1. Open Play Console and select your app.
  2. Go to Test and release > Testing > Closed testing.
  3. Open the closed track you are actually running (click Manage track if you have more than one).
  4. Select the Testers tab.
  5. Scroll to the section with the opt-in link and copy it.

Google's help page describes this simply: "Copy the shareable link to share the release with testers" (Set up an open, closed, or internal test).

Every testing track has its own link. The internal testing link and the closed testing link are different, and only the closed test counts toward the 12-tester requirement. If you're unsure which track is which, our explainer on internal, closed and open testing covers the difference.

Web link or Android link?

Play Console may show the invitation as a web link and an Android link; Google's help only describes a single shareable link, and both forms lead to the same invitation. Both lead to the same invitation, so you only need to share one. The exact labels in Play Console have changed over time, so look for the link on the Testers tab rather than for a specific button name.

In practice, the web link is the easier one to share:

  • It works when a tester opens it on a computer, which is handy if they want to accept the invitation in a browser where they can clearly see which Google account is signed in.
  • It also opens fine on a phone.

Whichever link you use, the tester then gets "an explanation of tester responsibilities and a link to opt in. Each tester needs to opt in using the link." Accepting that invitation is the step that matters. What counts as an opted-in tester explains why being on the list isn't enough on its own.

Why the link might be missing

If the Testers tab doesn't show a link, it's almost always one of these:

The release isn't published yet

Google says: "The opt-in link displays only when an app status is 'Published'. Apps in 'Draft' or 'Pending publication' status do not display an opt-in link." After you set up the track, you still have to send the changes for review from Publishing overview, and Google has to approve them. Reviews can take "a few hours or up to seven days (or longer in exceptional cases)". Our step-by-step track setup walks through that last step, which is the one most often missed. See also why a tester invite isn't approved.

It was published moments ago

Even after approval, "the test link can take several hours to become available to testers" the first time you publish a test. If testers see an error in the first hours, wait and try again before changing anything.

You're looking at the wrong track

If you created a second closed track, or you're on the internal testing page, the link you see belongs to that track. Check the track name at the top of the page.

Before you share: a quick check

Sharing the link to people who can't use it leads to confused testers and lost days. Confirm these first:

  • Testers are on the list. Each tester's Google account is on an email list attached to this track, or they're a member of a Google Group you added. Only listed testers can join. Email list or Google Group compares the two methods.
  • Their country is included. Testers in a country that isn't selected for the closed track likely can't get the app. Check the track's Countries/regions tab.
  • The app is compatible with their devices. Otherwise they'll be able to opt in but not install.

How to share it

The link itself is not secret, because only people on your tester list can join. Still, keep it tidy:

  1. Send it individually or to your tester group, not as a public social media post. Strangers who aren't on the list will just hit an error and may message you.
  2. Say which account to use. Write something like: "Please open this link while signed in with [email protected], the address I added." Account mix-ups are one of the most common reasons a tester doesn't count.
  3. Explain the three actions: open the link, accept the invitation, then install the app from Google Play using the same account.
  4. Ask them to stay opted in for at least 14 days, keep the app installed and use it. Google counts testers who stay opted in continuously for 14 days, and keeping the app installed and using it regularly is strongly advised.
  5. Tell them where to send feedback. Google suggests a feedback URL or email address on the track, and it "appears on your tester opt-in page".

A message you can copy

Hi! You're invited to test my Android app. Please open this link while signed in with the Google account I added ([email protected]): [link]. Tap to accept the invitation, then install the app from Google Play. Please keep it installed for at least 14 days and use it now and then. Any bugs or ideas, reply here. Thank you!

Do you need to reshare it after an update?

No. The link belongs to the track, not to a specific release. When you upload a new version to the same closed track, testers who already opted in get the update through Google Play as normal. You only need to share the link again with new testers you add.

Key takeaways

  • The link is on the Testers tab of your closed track.
  • It only appears when the app is Published, and can take several hours to work the first time.
  • Share one link per track; the web version is usually easiest.
  • Tell testers which Google account to use, and ask them to stay opted in for 14 days.

If you're working with GoPlayTester, the same rules apply: our setup guide shows how to add our tester group, select Indonesia on the track, send the change for review and then submit your testing link to us.
